There are some times when it is better to be runner-up. That might have been what Sara Roberson was thinking after being chosen "A" Day Queen on Sept. 10, 1977. The University of Arizona student was crowned with a shower of whitewash, while the eight runners-up stood by. It was all part of the annual ritual of whitewashing the "A" on "A" Mountain in recognition of the start of the school year. About 300 people had hiked up the mountain, also known as Sentinel Peak, to take part in the sloppy festivities.
