When former Pittsburgh Steeler Ernie Holmes stepped onto the Cholla High School football field, he definitely got the players' attention. Holmes, who spent eight years as part of the Steelers' Steel Curtain defense with Joe Greene and L.C. Greenwood, was a most imposing figure on the field. As he chomped down on his cigar on Sept. 13, 1982, he gave instruction to the Cholla Chargers. Holmes, who said he developed his drill sergeant attitude while working at the Florida State Prison, was coaching at Cholla part-time while working toward an education degree at the University of Arizona.
