For Howard Nafzger it was all about speed. He had recently set a world land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats in his 24-foot-long homemade racer. His streamline was clocked at an average speed of 184.333 mph. Nafzger, who designed the racer, is shown standing beside it on Sept. 23, 1987. The six-speed, 1,100-pound car cost $11,000 and took several thousand hours of labor to build.
