It was 1972 and the times, they were definitely a-changin.' Although women were finding employment in more and more male-dominated occupations, it would seem that the uniforms hadn't reached the same level of equality. The Plaza International Hotel, now a Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, at 1900 E. Speedway had hired Katy Kaye, left, and Bobby Schaus as "belle girls." At the time, it was believed they were among the first women in the country to work as hotel bellmen. As seen in this photo from Oct. 6, 1972, the uniform for the "belle girls" was a gold hot-pants outfit with boots. While it was taboo to compare tips, the pair estimated they had collected more than their male counterparts.
