It had been a South Tucson eyesore for several years, but the old Pima County Hospital site, at South Sixth Avenue just north of Interstate 10, was finally going to be cleaned up. Several of the town's local businessmen got together to organize a community project. On Oct. 22, 1982, they used borrowed heavy equipment and volunteer labor to clear the land, and the workers dined on food donated by local restaurants. In 1977, Pima County had moved the hospital to the new Kino Community Hospital. South Tucson purchased the old site from the county in 1980. At the location today, there is a shopping center anchored by a Food City supermarket.
