A few days ago we watched this feisty curve-billed thrasher repeatedly lunging at a 1-foot-long Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. The snake assumed an extremely defended position, twisting itself into a grotesque shape which protected its head from the bird's assaults. As we approached, the bird ran off, but the snake remained motionless. When we checked on it later, it had moved on.

Hero or fool? I've seen an adult Diamondback very casually strike at an unsuspecting bird that was landing too close - the bird toppeled over half a minute later and the snake tried out how far he could unhinge his jaws...Studies have shown that a lot of animal behavior depends on experience and on the outcome of first encounters. Your little snake may never try to attack a bird in its lifetime. Great photo!
