A well-known atheist was in Tucson on May 25, 1978, and she intended to "cost the city a great deal of money." Madalyn Murray O'Hair was here to help set up an Arizona chapter of her American Atheist Society, and then she was going to assist that new chapter in suing the Tucson City Council. She wanted to prevent the council from conducting a prayer before each meeting. The challenge was unsuccessful, and the city continues to open with an invocation. Shown here with O'Hair is her son, Jon Garth Murray, and her granddaughter, Robin. At that time, Robin was a student at Fenster School in Tucson. You can read about them in Tales from the Morgue at go.azstarnet.com/morguetales.
