It wasn't exactly a quiet day at the 18th fairway on June 19, 1978. Tucson National Golf Course was in the midst of a $500,000 project to make the course more difficult to play. With some improvements, its owners hoped the course would be more attractive to the U.S. Golf Association as a site for a major championship. Ten holes were being rebuilt. Included in the face-lift were adding a new irrigation system and three lakes and elevating greens. The work was scheduled to be done in two months.
