The temperature outside was 113 degrees on June 23, 1988, but Joe Garcia wore layers as he stacked bags of ice at Sparkle Ice Co. It is likely he and his co-workers were the envy of construction workers, landscapers and other outdoor workers as they toiled in temperatures ranging from about 28 degrees in the freezers to about 35 degrees where the ice was stacked for delivery. The employees at this and other local ice companies worked overtime to keep up with the demand for ice during the heat wave. Haywood Betters of Tucson Ice Co. noted, "When you come in from outside, it's great. But when you're in here all day, you've got to stay warm. I always have a runny nose."
