For Linda Cole, who was then 12 years old, it might have been a question of family honor. After all, two of her brothers already had won the Tucson Soap Box Derby. On July 28, 1973, she continued the tradition and took home the trophy and a $500 savings bond with a winning time of 32.72 seconds. And if it wasn't hard enough for the boys to accept being defeated by a girl for the first time in local history, second place was taken by Linda Coon with a time of 32.77. The competition took place at Derby Downs, on the east side of Tucson International Airport. At the national finals in Akron, Ohio, Linda lost in her first-round heat.
