There was a time, at the height of the Cold War, when Tucson was ringed with 18 Titan 2 missile silos. But in 1982, in accordance with treaties between the West and the Soviet Union, the missiles were destroyed, and the sites were leveled and cleared. The properties were sold and put to a variety of uses, including one that became a restaurant called the Burro Inn. On Aug. 25, 1993, Pete Goshia had a discussion with one of the eatery's namesakes. The little restaurant was just off Interstate 19 at the Chavez Siding, and Goshia hoped to turn it into a resort someday. BRUCE McCLELLAND / ARIZONA DAILY STAR 1993
