What is a professional sports team without cheerleaders? Apparently the Tucson Gunners, the city's new basketball team, didn't want to find out; they wanted cheerleaders. So on Oct. 7, 1978,, 15 hopefuls showed up to try out for the Gun-Swingers squad. Disco-dancing ability was the key to selection, and Nancy Elem, left, and Monica Almada practiced stepping to the music. According to Herb Brown, Gunners general manager and coach, the Gun-Swingers would be Tucson's first professional cheerleading squad. Benjie Sanders / Arizona Daily Star 1978
