ED COMPEAN / ARIZONA DAILY STAR 1993
On Dec. 6, 1993, University of Arizona President Manuel Pacheco announced that Jim Livengood would be the new athletic director. He was offered a three-year contract worth about $390,000 in base salary, with a clause in his contract that would be worth an extra six figures annually. Livengood, from Washington State University, was replacing Cedric Dempsey, who left to become executive director of the NCAA. At a press conference, Livengood said: "As we enter the next era, we need to look at endowments and hope that in 15 or 30 years people will look back and say, 'Gosh, back in the early '90s (the UA) was able to get a handle on endowments and those type of things.'
