BRUCE McCLELLAND / ARIZONA DAILY STAR 1989
It had been a miraculous recovery for Dave Dravecky. The San Francisco Giants pitcher had surgery to remove a tumor in his pitching arm. The surgery also removed about 50 percent of his deltoid muscle. But less than a year later, on Aug. 4, 1989, Dravecky was making his first start with the Phoenix Firebirds against the Tucson Toros. Dravecky pitched a complete game and won 3-2. After the game, he was called back up to the Giants. Within two weeks, Dravecky's arm fractured while he was pitching against Montreal. His arm was later amputated.
