Mrs Mesquite Girdler caught in the act. She chewed just through the cambium layer of a branch, so it will die. This keeps the tree from gumming up the eggs that she'll deposit in the branch while the larvae will still have relatively fresh wood to eat. Several other species of insects, who do not girdle themselves, will still make similar use of her branch. And we don't have to prune the tree this year.
