It is never a good idea to unveil a one-way sign until the street is really one-way, so on May 23, 1972, these new street signs at Stone Avenue and Alameda Street remained under wraps. But beginning June 4 their message would be revealed. City traffic engineer Charles Mele targeted that date to make Stone Avenue a southbound-only street in the Downtown area. To accommodate northbound traffic, Sixth Avenue would be paired with Stone and become exclusively one-way heading north.
