If there is a rule that says you have to have water in the river to have a river regatta, the thousands of spectators who showed up for the First Annual Rillito River Regatta didn't seem to know about it. The event, sponsored by KCEE radio and Golden Eagle Distributors, was held on May 30, 1982, along the banks of the Rillito. Much to the delight of the crowd, the "boats" — actually cars turned into floats — sailed along the riverbed, just east of First Avenue. An occasional "water skier" was also spotted. Proceeds went to local charities.
