Carl Trimmer has been a major figure in Tucson auto racing history since the late 1950s. Shown here with his car No. 74 on June 6, 1987, Trimmer expressed concern for the state of auto racing in Tucson in 1987. "It sucks," Trimmer told a reporter. "(Racing officials) have changed the rules about seven times." At that time, the purse for a local race was $600. For many local fans, the glory days of racing in Tucson were the 1970s and early 1980s when the on-track rivalry of Trimmer and former Indy-car racer Bill Cheesbourg was at its peak. "Racing means a lot to me," Trimmer said. "If it gets to where I can't win anymore, then I'll probably quit." The thrill must still be there, since Trimmer, who is now in his late 60s, is still racing.
