If it was an honor for Joe Garagiola to have Rodeo Park renamed Joe Garagiola's Rodeo Park in 1982, what was it when the Tucson City Council later removed his name from the park? There's no record of his reaction. But, on June 9, 1982, he was all smiles at the official dedication adding his name to the park located at Nogales Highway and Irvington Road. Garagiola, a broadcaster, author and former major-league catcher who lives in Phoenix, autographed a glove for Elton Begay and pledged to be personally involved in the park's future. In a controversial move, the council had added his name in recognition of Garagiola's work with the Tucson Open Golf Tournament. In 2001, the council changed the name again, this time to Rudy Garcia Park, honoring a longtime Tucsonan who had been instrumental in the park's development.
