I took this as an almost wide-angle view to get everything in for those that haven't yet been there. It's a tough call, wide or zoom - there's nowhere else to get this angle as it's straight down to the canyon bottom at this point on the (relatively wide) trail!
Have you seen these all summer or just the last few weeks?
Could be a (maybe immature) female rufous, which also look like immature males but males usually have more 'spotting' on the throat. Rufous are usually noticeably more aggressive around other hummers too.
Could also be a broad-tailed female; they're a little larger than rufous and more mild mannered.
Allen's are supposed to be mostly coastal CA, are considered 'rare but regular' in SoAZ ... but maybe!
Unfortunately, probably need to see displayed tail feathers for best ID :(
Made a similar trip a few years ago ... down Hermit to the river, another night in Monument Canyon, a couple days across the Tonto to the Bright Angel and out. Thanks for the memories (now I have to go find and scan those pics)!
This pic looks more 'rufous-y' than the other ... fun aren't they?!

Thanks, enjoy 'em while they're here!

With those light eyes, looks like a ministreak butterfly ... ? Nice pic of a small subject.
